How to disable a restriction for mobile internet sharing

January 13th, 2020 No comments

title='Notabene: disable a restriction for mobile internet sharingNowadays some of cell operators have a practice of restricting internet sharing function for smartphones. Usually it’s an attribute of family tariffs which also propose home internet and digital TV. This article will describe how to disable this restriction. The article is only for educational purpose of course, the author takes no responsibility for what you’re going to do with this information.

So, what will we need? First of all is smartphone with internet sharing function and second is macOS based laptop. We will not need to get root access to our smartphone. It’s all can be done with single terminal command.
A little bit of theory for the beginning. How do cell providers detect we’re sharing the internet? The packet structure of IP (Internet Protocol) contains a TTL attribute (Time To Live) which is integer. When the packet leaves its device, TTL value is set to some particular value, e.g. 128. When the packet goes through another router TTL value decreases by 1. This is how cell operator detects we’re using internet sharing. So all we need to do is to make initial TTL value bigger for 1 from its normal value.
Fortunately we can make it with single command in macOS.
But first we need to determine initial TTL value.

The recipe
1. Connect your laptop to smartphone hotspot.
2. Go to System preferences -> Network

Find your current IP address. Let it be 172.20.10.7.
Then the gate IP address in most cases will be 172.20.10.1 (change last number to 1).
3. Next we do ping of this gate

$ ping 172.20.10.1
PING 172.20.10.1 (172.20.10.1): 56 data bytes
64 bytes from 172.20.10.1: icmp_seq=0 ttl=64 time=2.165 ms
64 bytes from 172.20.10.1: icmp_seq=1 ttl=64 time=10.146 ms
64 bytes from 172.20.10.1: icmp_seq=2 ttl=64 time=3.050 ms
64 bytes from 172.20.10.1: icmp_seq=3 ttl=64 time=1.994 ms

and get TTL value.

4. Increase it by 1 and run the following command:

sudo sysctl net.inet.ip.ttl=65 net.inet.ip.ttl: 65 -> 65

The command requires admin password.

Готовим вкусняшки. Часть 4

November 6th, 2016 No comments

Duck Hunt: unraveling the mysteries

November 13th, 2013 1 comment

It’s long time I did not update my blog. There a lot of materials as always, it’s hard to find the time to compile them all together for complete blog article. Today I would like to write a sort of mini-post with elements momoirs that recently one thing has lost its mistery for me. It’s about the Duck Hunt application for legendary device named Dendy.
Dendy is an eight-bit tvset console, a clone of the japane Nintendo Entertainment System. It is connected to the TV-set usually with coaxial cable, after which the video signal is tuned up on one of the channels. Applications launche by means of removable cartridges that in fact represents the circuit board with chip ROM, storing the application code. Read more…

How to install ttf or otf font to OS X

June 23rd, 2013 1 comment

title='Notabene: install font to Mac OS X
Made a decision to write an article in notabene style. Otherwise I always forget and then painfully recall the solution of this issue I’d like to tell about. And the thing I’d like to about is how to install a font to Max OS X system, e.g. ttf (true type font) or otf (open type font). I didn’t find it in standard Settings App (maybe didn’t try too much:).

The trick is that you need to put font files to special folder which is /Library/System. If system language is not an English this folder may have specific name and look different in Finder app. In Russian it calls /Библиотека/Штрифты. The most difficult thing in all of this is how to get an access to Fonts folder using standard Finder App, because by detault it does’t show a number of folders considering them as system important I believe. So we just need to use standard Go To Folder facility. Just Open system menu of Finder app and choose Go To -> Go To Folder

Then piece of cake. Put /Library/Fonts string into spefcial field and press Go To

Copying all ttf-font files, I hope received from some legal source of course)

And voila. The fonts must appear imediately in all system font-dialogs if installation finished OK of course.

Business before pleasure. Part 8.

May 8th, 2013 No comments

No doudbt long weekend is very pleasure thing and the best and reasonble to spend it usefully for health and world outlook. Lond bank holidays we decided to make a little trip to Vyborg. A bit of wiki. Vyborg (English pronunciation: /ˈviːbɔrɡ/ Russian: Выборг) is a town in Leningrad Oblast, Russia, situated on the Karelian Isthmus near the head of the Bay of Vyborg, 130 kilometers (81 mi) to the northwest of St. Petersburg and 38 kilometers (24 mi) south from Russia’s border with Finland. The area where Vyborg is located used to be a trading center on the Vuoksi River’s western branch, which has dried up. The area was inhabited by the Karelians, a Balto-Finnic tribe which gradually came under the domination of Novgorod and Sweden. Vyborg remained in Swedish hands until its capture after the Siege of Vyborg by Emperor Peter the Great in the Great Northern War (1710). The Treaty of Nystad (1721), which concluded the war, assigned the town and a part of Old Finland to Russia. Read more…

The sun seems to over and we decide to make research teh most distant districts of Leningrad region. This time we’ve chosen a little town Priozers – the ancient town which situates in picturesque terrain on the coast of Ladozhskoye Lake. The best way to get to Priozers is drive by Viborgskoye highway. On first traffic police post turn right and follow about 1 kilometer until Yukki place then to Drashniki – Luppolove and then by A-129 interstate right to Priozersk. All the road is about 140km (~100 miles)
The first and almost single Attraction is fortress of Korela.

Watching IPTV on iPhone and iPad

July 8th, 2012 7 comments

Recently I’ve made a greate effort (basicaly applying to myself) – I’ve tuned up my wi-fi router Linksys WRT54G2 for sharing IPTV. In fact, the sharing is not only for the iPad abd iPhone, but for other devices as well, and the article is named to attract search traffic) The main goal of the experiment was to make my mac-computer able to view iptv. Although a TV as itself is pure evil, sometimes it is fun to watch in parallel with any news, educational, or sports, cartoons… As personally for me, it’s a kind of relax for the brain sometimes. And so what do we have at the moment: wifi-router Linksys WRT54G2, ISP Interzet (this is not a principle, again, it’s mentioned mostly for search engines), the iMac, Windows-PC computer and a bunch of gadgets – iPhone, iPad, androids.

White nights conference

July 1st, 2012 No comments

Somewhere in the middle of May I’ve heard about one famous event in the game-developement industry – the White Nights conference which’s gonna take place in the Saint-Petersburg city. The fact that Vasilievsky island has been announced as the venue has become an additional motivation for me to take part in this event. Basic motivation of course was to listen to wise men who succeeded in game-developement, besides, the list of conferies was very promising.

Business before pleasure. Part 6.

May 26th, 2012 No comments

When I’m planning some long-long travelling (for instance outside the continent) I recall one movie which calls The Thirteenth Floor. The idea of this movie was taken in a couple of scince fiction books one of which (collection of stories about Ion Tilhy) belongs to Stanislav Lemm – well known maitre of sci-fi genre and another one (Simpulation-3) to Daniel F. Galouye. Basic idea is a virtual worlds that are nested to each other. A main character finds the equipment for moving to a virtual world. He’s discovering usual people living there but in fact they all are just artificial intellegence who doesn’t realize itself. Their world has a strict border and there is no familar landscapes behind it. There are just graphical primitives outside. Local people never visited that place and didn’t know they were in artificial environment. This is the way I proove to myself that we’re not ligving inunfinished world when I have some long travelling :) This time I’ve decided to make sure that the one of the World Miracle – egyptian pyramids – really exists.
